Meet Naia at Ambassador Training

Naia attending her first Ambassador training at Deloitte’s annual Impact Day.

What change do you want to make in your community as a Virginia and DC Best Buddies ambassador?

“By getting more people involved in Best Buddies, I would like to change Best Buddies for the better. I want to change how people see adults and children with disabilities because we can do things that other people can do. I want people to see what we’re capable of even though we have disabilities and how we do things differently than other people as well.” – Naia F.

About Ambassadors:

Best Buddies Ambassadors gives people with and without IDD the opportunity to gain the public speaking skills, self-esteem and confidence needed to successfully advocate for themselves, their peers and Best Buddies in communities, workplaces, and government. The program aims to educate and empower generations of leaders, public speakers, and advocates for inclusion.

Virginia and DC ambassadors are agents of change and advocates in our local community. They hone their skills though attending leadership and professional development trainings every other month. Virgina and DC ambassadors are constantly called upon to speak at community and corporate events to spread awareness and the Best Buddies mission of inclusion.

Please contact ClairePascocello@bestbuddies.org if you would like to learn more about the Ambassadors program.

Pauls Path to Professional Growth

Paul turned to the Best Buddies Jobs program to find a competitive employment opportunity with the potential for long-term growth. He wanted to find a career that not only matched his skills and interests but also challenged him. Quickly after starting the job development progress, Paul accepted a job offer for an Administrative Assistant role at The Whiting-Turner Contracting Company and has been there for the past six years.

While his primary responsibilities include ensuring the completion of subcontractor documentation and managing weekly meetings, Paul’s impact transcends his job description. Recognized as the “Mayor” of the office by his coworkers, he fosters a sense of community by connecting with colleagues, fostering engagement in company events, and maintaining a deep understanding of ongoing projects. One of his coworkers stated, “Paul has brought all of us together. He also knows everyone, which makes things run smoothly in the office because of his communication and ability to relate to everyone. He is always on task and ready to take on more responsibility. If Paul says that he is going to get something done, he does!”

Paul’s tenure at Whiting-Turner hasn’t just enhanced the company’s operations; it’s also been a journey of personal growth. Reflecting on his experience, Paul said, “My job has allowed me to become more professional and social at the same time. It has made talking to others easier.” Paul’s job is more than just a paycheck; it has allowed him to develop his confidence and self-advocacy skills.

Paul’s story serves as an inspiration, showcasing the mutually beneficial relationship our Jobs program strives to build between our Jobs program participants and employer partners. We look forward to seeing Paul continue to take on more responsibilities and continue to achieve milestones in his career!

Celebrating 30 years of Best Buddies in Pennsylvania https://www.bestbuddies.org/pennsylvania/celebrating-30-years-of-best-buddies-in-pennsylvania Wed, 10 Jul 2024 13:49:33 +0000 https://www.bestbuddies.org/?p=182912 Celebrating three decades of fostering friendships and inclusion for individuals with IDD.

30 Years in Pennsylvania Banner

As we celebrate the 30th anniversary of Best Buddies in Pennsylvania, we are reminded of the incredible journey that began in 1994 and the unwavering dedication of our volunteers, participants, and supporters. From our humble beginnings at Penn State University and Kutztown University to our expansion into high schools, middle schools, and elementary schools, our mission to foster inclusion and friendships for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) has grown in remarkable ways.

In 1994, Best Buddies made its debut in Pennsylvania with the establishment of our first college chapters at Penn State University and Kutztown University. These pioneering chapters laid the foundation for a movement that would touch the lives of thousands across the state. The enthusiasm and commitment of students, faculty, and community members set the stage for what was to come.

Recognizing the need to reach younger individuals, we introduced high school programs in 1997. Archbishop John Carroll High School became the first high school in Pennsylvania to embrace the Best Buddies mission. This expansion allowed us to create meaningful friendships during the formative high school years, fostering a culture of inclusion and acceptance.

30 Years in Pennsylvania Buddies

In 2011, we took another significant step by launching middle school programs. Stetson Middle School was among the first to join our cause, providing students with the opportunity to develop friendships and leadership skills early in their educational journey. These programs have been instrumental in shaping the social and emotional growth of young students.

Our commitment to inclusion and friendship continued to grow with the introduction of elementary school programs in 2019. KD Markley Elementary, Riverside Elementary, and Burchfield Primary School were among the first to embrace the Best Buddies mission at the elementary level. These programs have allowed us to instill the values of friendship and acceptance in even our youngest participants.

Today, Best Buddies in Pennsylvania boasts 145 chapters across the state, impacting almost 7,000 people through our school friendship programs. This is a testament to the dedication and passion of our volunteers and supporters. We are proud to uphold three of the five Best Buddies pillars: Friendship, Leadership Development, and Inclusive Living.

30 Years in Pennsylvania Buddies Collage

Our Friendship programs continue to create one-to-one friendships between individuals with and without IDD, fostering a sense of belonging and connection. Our Leadership Development programs empower individuals with IDD to become leaders and advocates for themselves and their peers. Through training, workshops, and opportunities for public speaking, participants develop essential skills that enable them to contribute meaningfully to their communities.

This fall, we are thrilled to announce the launch of our Inclusive Living program at Penn State University. This initiative will provide individuals with IDD the opportunity to live independently with their peers in a supportive and inclusive environment. It represents a significant milestone in our mission to create opportunities for all individuals to live fulfilling and self-determined lives.

As we reflect on the past 30 years, we are profoundly grateful to the countless volunteers, participants, families, and supporters who have made this journey possible. Your dedication, enthusiasm, and belief in the power of inclusion have been the driving force behind our success. Together, we have built a community that celebrates diversity, fosters meaningful relationships, and empowers individuals with IDD to reach their full potential.

As we look to the future, we are excited to continue our mission and expand our impact. We invite you to join us in celebrating this remarkable milestone and to be a part of the next chapter in the Best Buddies story. Together, we can create a world where everyone is included and valued, and where the bonds of friendship know no bounds.

Thank you for being a part of our journey and for making the last 30 years truly extraordinary. Here’s to the next 30 years of friendship, inclusion, and empowerment with Best Buddies in Pennsylvania! Click here to support these efforts.

Hyannis Port Getting Started

In a remarkable demonstration of dedication, perseverance, and community spirit, Best Buddies CT participants took on the Hyannis Port 2024 Challenge on May 31st, riding over 50 miles to support their cause. This annual event is much more than a bike ride; it is a powerful movement that brings together people from all walks of life, united by a common goal: to raise awareness and funds for Best Buddies, an organization committed to fostering inclusion and friendship for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Representing Team Cheshire, Matt Davies, Kathleen Moran, Kate Fleury, and Gina Allegrini embodied the true essence of teamwork and perseverance as they pedaled through the scenic route. Their journey was not just a physical challenge but also a testament to their unwavering commitment to making a positive impact in the lives of others. Each mile they rode was imbued with purpose, driven by the knowledge that their efforts would help create opportunities for individuals to form meaningful connections and be included in their communities.

Hyannis Port Collage

The team’s dedication culminated in an impressive achievement, raising nearly $21,000 to further Best Buddies’ mission. This substantial contribution is a testament to their commitment and the supportive network rallying behind them. It reflects the power of collective action and the profound impact that can be achieved when individuals come together for a shared cause.

One of the most inspiring aspects of the Hyannis Port Challenge is the sense of community it fosters. Riders, volunteers, and supporters come together, creating a vibrant tapestry of unity and support. This event is not just about the physical challenge of cycling 50 miles; it is about the connections made along the way, the stories shared, and the collective effort to create a more inclusive world.

Angelo Santiago, State Ambassador and ECSU Chapter member, joined the ride for the second consecutive year, adding his voice to the chorus of those advocating for this meaningful cause. Reflecting on his experience, Angelo shared, “The Best Buddies Challenge is an awesome opportunity for you to connect with others who feel motivated to support an organization like Best Buddies. If you ever have the opportunity to ride, volunteer, or participate in the challenge in some way, I would recommend it!” His words resonate deeply, capturing the essence of what makes this event so special: the opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals who are passionate about making a difference.

The Hyannis Port Challenge is not just a fundraising event; it is a celebration of the power of community and the difference that individuals can make when they come together with a common goal. The participants’ journey, marked by determination and camaraderie, serves as a powerful reminder that when we ride together, we rise together, building a more inclusive and compassionate world for all.

Hyannis Port Friends

Throughout the ride, the spirit of camaraderie and mutual support is palpable. Participants cheer each other on, offering words of encouragement and sharing moments of triumph and perseverance. This sense of solidarity is one of the defining features of the Hyannis Port Challenge, creating an atmosphere where everyone feels valued and included.

The scenic route itself adds to the experience, providing riders with breathtaking views and a sense of connection to the natural beauty around them. As they pedal through picturesque landscapes, the riders are reminded of the importance of taking time to appreciate the journey, both literally and metaphorically. Each mile brings them closer to their destination, but it is the collective effort and shared experiences along the way that truly define the journey.

The impact of the funds raised through the Hyannis Port Challenge is significant. Best Buddies relies on the support of events like this to fund their programs, which create opportunities for one-to-one friendships, integrated employment, leadership development, and inclusive living for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The money raised by Team Cheshire and other participants will help ensure that these programs can continue to thrive, making a tangible difference in the lives of countless individuals.

The Hyannis Port Challenge also serves as a platform for raising awareness about the importance of inclusion and the need to break down barriers for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Through their participation, riders and supporters help spread the message that everyone deserves to be included and valued for who they are. This message resonates far beyond the event itself, inspiring others to take action in their own communities and create a more inclusive world.

As the sun set on this year’s challenge, the spirit of the participants shone brightly, inspiring others to join the movement. Their journey, marked by determination and camaraderie, serves as a powerful reminder that when we ride together, we rise together, building a more inclusive and compassionate world for all.

In the end, the Hyannis Port Challenge is about more than just cycling; it is about the power of human connection and the impact that individuals can have when they come together for a common cause. It is a celebration of the values that Best Buddies stands for: inclusion, friendship, and the belief that everyone deserves to be valued and included. Through their participation in this event, Matt Davies, Kathleen Moran, Kate Fleury, Gina Allegrini, Angelo Santiago, and countless others are helping to create a world where these values are not just ideals, but realities.

Their efforts are a testament to the power of community and the difference that can be made when we all work together. As we look to the future, we can be inspired by their example and motivated to continue the work of creating a more inclusive and compassionate world. The Hyannis Port Challenge is more than just an event; it is a movement, and it is one that we can all be a part of.
